False melic grass grows in a variety of wooded upland habitats in the deciduous forest and coniferous forest regions. It grows on dry, sandy soil or in rocky woods, often under a partial canopy of trees. The leaves grow in a radiating cluster at ground level. The flowers come from the tips of long drooping branches.
